Playa del Inglés is a vibrant and popular resort town located on the southern coast of Gran Canaria, one of Spain’s Canary Islands.

Geography and location: Playa del Inglés is part of the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana and, together with the nearby resorts of San Agustín and Sonnenland, forms the larger Maspalomas resort zone. The beach of Playa del Inglés stretches for about 3 kilometers and borders the famous Maspalomas dunes.

History: There is some debate about the origin of the name “Playa del Inglés” (Englishman’s Beach). A common explanation is that an English bohemian settled in this untouched area in the early 20th century. However, it is also claimed that this bohemian was actually French but was mistaken for an Englishman by the locals. The area remained largely unspoiled until the 1960s when large-scale tourist developments began. Many of the original large concrete tower buildings have been renovated in recent years to better blend with the surroundings.

Tourist Development: Playa del Inglés is one of the most visited tourist destinations on Gran Canaria, mainly due to its expansive beach and vibrant nightlife. The resort offers a wide range of accommodations, from luxury hotels to budget-friendly apartments. There are also numerous shopping centers, with Yumbo Centrum and Kasbah being the largest and most well-known.

Nightlife: Playa del Inglés is famous for its lively nightlife. In addition to Yumbo Centrum, other popular nightlife areas include Kasbah Centrum and Cita Shopping Center. The resort offers a variety of bars, nightclubs, and restaurants that ensure a vibrant night scene.

Activities and attractions: Besides sunbathing and swimming, Playa del Inglés offers numerous activities and excursions. Watersports such as jet skiing, windsurfing, and parasailing are popular. Visitors can also enjoy boat trips, diving, and dune safari tours. Nearby attractions include the Maspalomas Lighthouse (Faro de Maspalomas), Palmitos Park (a zoo and botanical garden), and Aqualand Maspalomas (a large water park).

Climate: Playa del Inglés has a pleasant subtropical climate with mild temperatures year-round, making it an ideal destination for winter sun vacations. Temperatures rarely drop below 20 degrees Celsius, even in the winter months.
